Why ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ will be unlike any movie before it
If you are just now rolling out of the bed or you do not pay attention to the internet much – you have missed one helluva of a trailer. Good Morning America dropped the teaser for this years ‘Star Wars: Rogue One‘ and it was freaking amazing. In my honest opinion this trailer looks better than the Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer. I honestly feel like this will be the movie of the year, but before you get your pitch forks and torches let me explain why.
First, this movie takes us back to the height of the Empire’s reign over the galaxy. Although the trailer does not show Darth Vader, we can feel his presence. Usually where Darth Vader is, death and destruction follow. (I myself am a huge Darth Vader fan and his inclusion in this movie gets me very excited.) Gareth Edwards has set a tone that this movie will be more edgier with grit and darkness. Rogue One is going to be a take no prisoners attitude type of film. The darkest film of the series is Episode III: Revenge of the Sith but I have a feeling this will surpass that. The music is very ominous and not the upbeat themes from trailers past. This tone and edge can open the door to more serious Star Wars movies. A Boba Fett movie in my opinion would be darker and not the lighter tone of the current Episodes.
There is going to be death and despair in this movie. The Empire is showing no mercy and this theme might beyond what some expect. I doubt we see Rated R gore type deaths but audiences might be shocked at how some are portrayed in this movie. I think the body count is going to be high and we will feel its impact. Remember in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Mon Mothma said “Many Bothans died to bring us this information“. We only knew that many died but this movie will show us just how many died and how they died. -CHILLS!
The film has a very World War II vibe to it, but I feel it will also have a Mission: Impossible spy theme as well with the Rebels doing covert operations to retrieve the Death Star plans. I think the action scenes in this film will be unlike we have ever seen. I love how gritty the combat scenes look and the emotion that it will deliver once we have seen it. Donnie Yen will bring a more martial arts type action and from the trailer we see more hands on combat rather than using blasters and light sabers.
The movie also gives us a new female lead which is much different from Rey (Daisy Ridley) in The Force Awakens. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is not some new kid on the block. Her skills are proven and this is why she is chosen to undertake a grand mission for the Rebellion. I have already seen to many jokes comparing her to Rey and Katniss Everdeen. Jyn Erso looks far from a Mary Sue and people should not be offended by a strong female lead. I feel more comfortable with Jyn because Gareth has already set up her background. She does not show up out of nowhere and can pull of great feats with no prior knowledge or training.
I think this will be the movie for non Star Wars fans to get behind as well as the hardcore fans. Some fans as I said will be turned off by the darker tone and this might not be the movie for children. There is more to see but I do not see this being the typical Star Wars movie. I get a Star Wars: Battlefront vibe from the trailer and Gareth set the tone early that his vision will be one that we have never seen before. I think the action in this film will be off the charts and since this movie will feature no Jedi for the first time its going to be in the trenches, dog fights, and hand to hand combat. The only Force user in the movie will be Darth Vader and we still have no clue how large his role will be or if he will be in any altercations.
The film is still eight long months away and in that time I am sure we will get more looks into this but right now I feel like Disney and LucasFilm have hit another home run with Star Wars: Rogue One. I truly feel like this will be the film to beat this year and will mark two years in a row that Star Wars has dominated the headlines and the box-office.
