Will Richardson Draft Profile

Will Richardson draft profile

Strengths:

  • Keeps blocks centered and sustained
  • Very good timing working up to linebackers
  • Uses strong, well-timed punch from his outside hand
  • Has adequate athletic ability for recovery when beaten
  • Powerful hips
  • Leverage wins at point of attack
  • Initial pass slides are quick and choppy

Analysis: Will Richardson had an up-and-down career at NC State filled with solid play and mired in off-the-field issues. Richardson is athletic for his size and generally keeps his blocks centered in front of him. He has powerful hips and that allows him to win leverage battles with opposing defenders. Strong, initial punch thwarts rushers. He can work up to the second level with solid combo blocks and understands the angles to knock the linebackers out of the play. Pass protection is decent at times, specifically when his pass slides are technique driven and focused–he works back quickly with short choppy steps.

Weaknesses:

  • Built like a guard
  • Carries soft weight
  • Off-the-field issues
  • Can be a step slow in initial lateral movement
  • Bends at the waist and over-extends
  • Inconsistent weight displacement in sets when he fears edge speed
  • Base gets too wide causing him to lose footing
  • Can be tilted, with well-timed stab move
  • Leg stiffness

Analysis: Will Richardson played outside at NC State but his body screams offensive guard–it will be interesting to see if the team that selects him kicks him inside in the pros. Richardson was the team’s top lineman and started 10 games at right tackle in 2017, missing the first two due to suspension after an arrest for driving while intoxicated. It was his second suspension for that offense, as he was sat down for one game in his redshirt freshman season in 2015. Those off-the-field concerns aren’t taken lightly by NFL teams in the draft process. Despite his decent athleticism, Richardson’s lateral movements are slow and prodding. He has inconsistent weight disbursement when facing edge rushers with the speed to beat him to the outside. He is aware of that and his technique suffers. Powerful lineman can also get him off-balance with a powerful strike to the body. Base needs to be consistent instead of all over the place. Stiff legs throughout.

What the experts say: “There are some things you have to work through. Are you OK with off-field stuff? Can he excel in something other than the heavy zone stuff that N.C. State runs? Is he athletic enough to handle the sub-package looks he’s going to get?” – AFC Personnel Director
