One of the biggest challenges for the Florida Gators this summer will be deciding who will start at quarterback. Although Treon Harris has the experience, Will Grier’s style fits better with what new head coach, Jim McElwain, wants to do with the offense. McElwain is entering his first year as head coach of the Gators after having a successful stint as head coach of Colorado State. He is known for running a pro-style offense and running that style has been successful for him in the past. Harris’ biggest strengths last season were his ability to extend plays and to pick up yards when a sack seemed inevitable. Although Grier did not see the field last season, his overall game play fits better with McElwain’s mindset, which will give Grier the edge.

The Gators need to find an answer for the quarterback position because the team’s offense has been extremely inconsistent for a while. Coach McElwain and his offensive staff can only do so much to put the quarterback in a great position to succeed. Whoever gets the starting nod will need to put his trust in the coaching staff, knowing that they will do whatever they can to make him succeed at a high level. The Gators have a lot of talent on defense which should allow the offense to work their way into a new system.

Given what we know about the two leading quarterback candidates, I believe that Grier will win the job. Harris had a very up and down season last year and choosing the candidate that will have the best chance to succeed in his system is important to Coach McElwain. Gator fans are looking forward to a great year filled with hope, which is why choosing the right quarterback will be vital to the success of the team.
