Women’s World Cup Group D preview: another group of death for U.S. Soccer
Group D is considered by many to be the “Group of Death” for the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Three of the four teams (Australia, Sweden, U.S.A.) made it at least as far as the quarterfinals in 2011, two of those three (U.S.A. and Sweden) made it to the semifinals, and the U.S.A lost in the final in a shootout. The fourth team, Nigeria, is the best that Africa has to offer.
Australia is a team that has finally gained experience to go with its aggressive talent. Nigeria are a group with tons of pace who love to attack but cannot match that tenacity and mental stability on defense. Sweden is bigger, faster, and more direct than the other teams in their group but now bring with them a more tactically sound coach in former United States Women’s manager Pia Sundhage. The United States are consistently ranked in the top two in the world. While they have had some missteps in the past few months, they rarely fail in the big moments and are just as dangerous as ever.
All four teams had dominant qualifying campaigns and are coming in to the tournament with a ton of momentum. Sweden is a historically strong team who have never won the tournament, and are hungry for that first star on their chest. The same could be said for Australia, who is trying to make it beyond the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. Even with Nigeria’s dominant continental history, they’ve only made it further than the group stage once and want to prove they belong with the world elite. The U.S. women are trying to win their third title but the first since 1999. Needless to say, the competition is fierce and deadly. Whoever makes it out of this group will be in a good spot to win it all.
Why is it that the U.S. teams always seem to be placed in the Group of Death? Will they put their inconsistent play behind them and win the Women’s World Cup? Leave your comments in the section below.
