Wyoming vs New Mexico Preview and Prediction
Wyoming vs New Mexico Preview
Records: Wyoming 11-5 (2-1) vs New Mexico 7-10 (2-2)
A Mountain West showdown will tip-off tonight in Albuquerque, New Mexico as the Wyoming Cowboys look to improve upon their impressive conference record. The Cowboys defeated San Diego State and Boise State while falling to one of the top teams in the conference in Nevada.
If Wyoming is going to continue to pile up the wins they will have to do something they haven’t been able to do consistently all season: win on the road.
“Every road game is going to be important,” Wyoming senior Alan Herndon said. “Every game is important, but especially on the road. We want to be able to go out and get some road wins. I think it’s just very important for this team just to move forward. I think we do a very good job of defending home court, but now in order to get to where we want to, we’ve got to go into other people’s gyms and be able to steal some wins on their court.”
Wyoming has only won one game this season away from home, and that came back in November against Oregon State.
“It can all start with New Mexico,” Herndon said, “but we’ve got to go out there and play hard against a very tough team.”
Wyoming will be without forward Jordan Naughton (back), and junior starter Justin James is day-to-day after taking a knee to the groin area against Boise State.
The New Mexico Lobos snapped their 2-game losing streak and improved to 7-10 (2-2 MW) on the season after defeating the San Jose State Spartans, 80-47, this past Saturday. New Mexico was outstanding on the defensive end against the Spartans and had little trouble pulling away for the victory after taking a 39-23 halftime lead. They held San Jose State to 31.8% shooting from the field and 27.3% (3-11) from beyond the arc in the victory.
Leading the way for the Lobos was Joe Furstinger who had 10 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 5 steals. On the season, New Mexico is averaging 79.3 ppg on 42.2% shooting from the field.
Don’t look at the records of these two teams and assume Wyoming will knock off New Mexico with ease. As mentioned, Wyoming is not a very good team on the road and Dreamstyle Arena is one of the most difficult places to play in college basketball. Add in the Cowboys are dealing with a couple of injuries and it is the Lobos who are favored to win this game.
