With a roughly a third of the MLB season in the books, we have a pretty good idea of how the league is shaping up. There have been pleasant surprises, like the Yankees leading the AL East, and some not so pleasant, such as C.C. Sabathia leading the AL in losses. The Yankees’ promising start is thanks to a number of factors, one of the most essential of which has been Mark Teixeira.

Coming off a number of consecutive injury riddled seasons, Teixeira is turning in one of his best in pinstripes. The slugger is leading the American League in RBIs and remains easily on pace for more than 40 home runs. It appears reaching his milestone 400th career home run is likely.

It’s odd that Teixeira has only been elected to two all-star teams in his career. With eight seasons of 30+ home runs under his belt and a ninth seemingly on the way, he deserves an appearance this year. If he keeps playing at this level, MVP voters should at least acknowledge him as a candidate. Without the stellar performance of Mark Teixeira the Yankees would be in a shockingly different position.
