Yankees Set with Didi Gregorius
Last Years Bold Move Pays off for Yankees
After the retirement of long-time Yankee great, Derek Jeter, it seemed a cloud hung over the left side of the team’s infield. A void that could never quite be filled again. Who could replace “The Captain,” the man who utterly embodied what it means to be a Yankee? …Enter Didi Gregorius
No one expected Gregorius to become the next Derek Jeter. At the beginning of last season, some people even questioned whether or not he could be a productive every day starter. After all, he’d batted just .226 the previous year with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The young, relatively unproven, shortstop had a lot of questions to answer.
However, over the course of the 2015 season, Gregorius solidified his spot on the Yankees’ depth chart. Proving himself both a solid defensive and offensive player, he showcased the skills that made him such an attractive asset, in the eyes of the Yankees’ front office. As the season progressed it seemed Gregorius was becoming more comfortable with his role. In the second half of last season he really stepped up his game, batting .294 with a .345 OBP.
While Didi will surely never replace Jeter, he can clearly be a solid contributor. At just 25 years old, Gregorius is still developing his game. Certainly the future is bright for this Yankees newcomer.
