The New York Yankees have agreed to a 1-year, $13 million deal with 7-time All Star Matt Holliday, 37, after missing out on Carlos Beltran who signed with the Houston Astros on a 1-year, $16 million deal. Beltran who was a key cog in the middle of the Yankees’ lineup batted .304, while hitting 22 home runs and 64 RBIs in 99 games before being dealt to the Texas Rangers. In response to the Beltran signing, the Yankees moved quickly to agree with terms with Holliday who will serve as their everyday designated hitter, as well as insurance at first base behind Greg Bird, and occasionally in the outfield.

Holliday who batted .246, along with 20 home runs, which would’ve been good for 5th on the Yankees, and 62 RBIs, which would’ve been good for 4th on the Yankees seems like a great short-term fit if he can remain healthy, after only playing 110 games for the Cardinals in 2016. The Yankees, who were in dire need for offensive help, after dealing Brian McCann to the Astros, and ranked 19th in home runs (183), 21st in SLG% (.405), and 24th in OPS% (.720) solved their DH-hole with Holliday, who’ll look to be plugged in the middle of lineup, as protection for Gary Sanchez.
