Yasmany Tomas was signed to a six-year $68.5 million contract this offseason, with the intent of starting the season with the big league club right away out of Spring Training. Yesterday Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart optioned Tomas to Triple-A Reno, so he can hone his defensive skills. Arizona’s plan was for Tomas to be there everyday third baseman, but when he arrived to spring camp you could tell almost immediately he was in over his head in the infield. His everyday position was outfield for the Cuban team and the D-Backs already have a crowded outfield that includes Mark Trumbo, AJ Pollack, and a combination of Ender Inciarte and David Peralta. Tomas did not show enough during the spring batting .273 with 2 HR and 12 RBI, but I would not expect him to stay down long if he can show competence defensively, because his bat is major league ready.

The Diamondbacks are not expected to compete for much in 2015, but to start the season every team has hope. If you drafted Tomas on your fantasy roster, and you have the ability to stash him I would, the baseball season is very long and he has the potential to be up by the end of April.
